Axpo building largest solar roof system in Europa

Baden/Dourges - Axpo from the canton of Aargau has begun construction of a rooftop solar system in Dourges, northern France. The Axpo subsidiary Urbasolar is building the plant with a capacity of 18 megawatts. It will be the largest system of its kind in Europe.

(CONNECT) The Axpo subsidiary Urbasolar from Montpellier is building Europe’s largest single-span rooftop solar system in Dourges, northern France. The 136,000 sqm system on the roof of the OMEGA logistics building will have a capacity of 18 megawatts, as the company reported. It could supply over 4,500 households with electricity.

The building of the logistics company ID Logistic is designed as a model of energy efficiency.  It consists of twelve storage units, each with an area of around 11,000 sqm. It has space for up to 450 employees, including those of the PepsiCo Group, which has also chosen OMEGA.

Construction work will be completed in two phases. Rather than the legal minimum of 30 percent, the entire usable roof area will be equipped with the solar plant. The project is being led by SPLA Delta 3 and supported by various investors.

“This project is a milestone in our sustainability strategy. By integrating state-of-the-art photovoltaic solutions, we are demonstrating that solar energy can significantly reduce energy costs and CO₂ emissions,” said Antoine Millioud, President of Urbasolar and Head of the Solar Division at Axpo, in the statement. “We value working with partners who share our vision of a sustainable energy future.” The project underlines Axpo’s commitment to driving forward the energy transition and expanding renewable energy sources. ce/ww
