Axpo completes construction of four solar parks in Spain
(CONNECT) According to a press release, Axpo, the Swiss power producer based in Baden in the canton of Aargau, has completed its largest solar power portfolio in Spain following a construction period of around 12 months. The Vilecha solar complex is situated in the province of Léon and comprises four photovoltaic installations that each offer an output of 50 megawatt peak. The renewable power generated here will be fed into the national grid from the end of the first quarter of 2026.
The Vilecha solar parks comprise 365,000 solar modules. Across an area of 360 hectares, these modules are mounted on tracking systems which optimize solar capture throughout the day. The facility produces more than 377,000 megawatt hours of energy per year, which equates to the energy consumption of 100,000 people and saves around 75,000 tons of CO2.
According to Axpo, the implementation of the four solar parks across various types of terrain and connecting them to a 132-kilovolt substation presented technical and organizational challenges. This reportedly required “a high level of engineering and planning expertise”. Nevertheless, the project was completed successfully and on time.
“This is our first large-scale solar plant developed and built in Spain”, as Antoine Millioud, Head of the Solar Division at Axpo, explains. These four solar parks are said to consolidate the company’s presence on the Spanish market. “Such an achievement is testament to our highly effective team and a tried and tested approach that can be replicated in other European countries”, Millioud adds. At present, the company is building new solar power plants in Zaragoza and Córdoba, with both projects reportedly being realized in line with the same high standards of technical excellence and sustainability. ce/mm
