Omya completes revitalization of fertilizer plant in Kansas

Oftringen/Wathena - Omya has revitalized the granulation plant for agricultural minerals that it acquired in the US state of Kansas in 2022. It is now positioned to expand in the Midwestern USA. The company based in Oftringen in the Swiss canton of Aargau is also lining up further modernization projects this year.

(CONNECTOmya has completed the first phase of redevelopment at its plant in eastern Kansas. The now fully revitalized granulation plant in Wathena, Omya Kansas, was acquired in 2022 with plans to bring it up to Omya's high global standards for producing specialty fertilizer products made from limestone, gypsum and dolomitic lime.

With the renovation, Omya has built a foundation for its long-term plan to offer high-quality granulated fertilizer products to Midwest and Great Plains farmers, according to a statement from the global company that produces and distributes essential minerals and specialty chemicals.

The director of operations at the Wathena plant, Olav Bergset, described the revitalization project as a “success because a lot of critical upgrades came together and added up to improve the overall work environment for our employees and make the facility what Omya's world-class standards require it to be—a safe and efficient producer of consistently high-quality products”. Omya has also introduced shift work and expanded opportunities for training and advancement, he added.

As part of the company's continued expansion in the Midwest, Omya Kansas plans to begin further modernization work this year following the completion of this initial expansion phase. “This project's successful completion is something to celebrate,” said Bergset. “But we have more improvements slated for next year, so the plant's future is bright and full of good work." ce/mm
