Axpo inaugurates in Spain its largest solar park to date
(CONNECT) The energy service provider Axpo, which is headquartered in Baden in the Swiss canton of Aargau, has officially inaugurated the Vilecha solar complex in the Spanish province of León. The facility in Vilecha has four photovoltaic parks featuring a total of 365,000 modules. Covering an area of 310 hectares, it is the Axpo Group’s largest-scale solar plant, according to a statement.
The new facility produces renewable energy with a peak output of 200 megawatts. Approximately 377 gigawatt-hours of electricity are generated annually, which is equivalent to the average energy consumption of 100,000 people. Solar power from the Vilecha park has been fed into the grid since February 2026. According to the company, the facility can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75,000 tons a year.
In conjunction with the official opening, Axpo has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with McDonald’s Spain for a period of 10 years. Under the agreement, Vilecha will supply 83 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. Another 10-year agreement with Rockwool will take effect in early 2027, providing for the supply of 450 gigawatt-hours of solar power.
“The Vilecha project reflects our ambition to expand renewable energy across Europe,” Axpo Deputy CEO Andy Heiz is quoted as saying. “Large-scale renewable energy can make an important contribution to secure and low-emission energy supply.” The facility, he said, “reaffirms our ability to deliver energy solutions across diverse European markets".
Antoine Millioud highlighted the solar facility’s sustainability. “This project demonstrates that high technical standards and environmental requirements can combine to make a positive impact on the region,” said Axpo’s Solar Division Managing Director. ce/ww
